Un Día de Mi Vida

No flash, natural lights reflecting into my window from the building across the way, using an iPhone X.

This messy coffee table sums up a my current life quite well. My day starts off with my Bible (far left). Next I move on to drinking some juice (cappuccino if I’m feeling bougie) from the cup set my sister got for Clark and I at our wedding shower. Headphones are a daily necessity as I bike to and from campus. The candle gives my life some aesthetic value. Lastly there are coasters handmade by Clark of our favorite photos, a wedding gift in progress, and the book to our finance course.

Each of these items has a special place in my life as of current and each provides me or aleves me of stress and strain from the day-to-day. The lighting conditions were good because there was no direct, harsh light, and there are few shadows. This natural light allowed for the colors to be most normal and non distorted.

Flash, dark room, shot on iPhone X

The above picture is my bike. This bike has been my saving grace since my car was totaled by yours truly. This photo was in a dark room with just my flash, hence the reason the reflector has a light flare and the colors are so apparent in some areas and lacking in others.

I am not a fan of flash only photos because I feel that it causes distortion and does not portray accurately the colors of an object. I feel that flash and natural light is the best option if there are shadows and they need to be slowed down. I believe that natural light is best when you are not in direct sunlight. The direct light is too harsh and will not yield a good photo.

Taken during tutoring session. iPhone X. Flash and natural light.

The above photo is one I snapped while at school. I am constantly studying, teaching, or learning something. This is simply an aspect of my life. Another huge aspect is the big title on the cup. Mr., and I have a cup that says Mrs. as well, these titles are going to be my and my husband’s titles in less than 80 days.

Wedding planning is no easy task. School is no easy task. Wedding planning and taking 15 hours is really no easy task. But, I know that my God is sufficient and can provide for me all that I need. I just need to trust in Him.

The photo of the singular cup was taken using flash and natural light. The natural light was behind the cup and acted as a backlight. The flash illuminated the face of the cup and allowed details to be seen that would have otherwise been lost. The combination of flash and natural light is most beneficial when you can take the photo from an angle that makes one the key light and the other is simply used for lighting the background.

Home Away from Home

Sitting in a cushioned leather booth with my hands resting on a tabletop handmade of pecan wood I cannot help but feel at home. Located just a mile off Interstate 20 rests JT2 Gourmet Burger and Ranch Market. It is more than just your average restaurant, it feels like home through the décor, the ambiance, and most of all the people.

Jason and Jolie Taylor dreamed of one day owning a place where people could go and eat true meat, straight off the ranch, without having to pay a fortune for it, thus JT2 was born.

The experience of JT2 began for me as soon as I opened the door to my vehicle, smells that took me back to the backyard cookouts of my childhood wafted into my nose and I was eager to step inside of this cow-colored building that hosts a modest array of greenery right outside the front entrance.

Immediately upon entering I was greeted by a curly-topped cheerful young lady named DJ. In a singsong voice, she walked me through the ordering process and promptly handed me a cattle tag to serve as my table marker, then encouraged me to take a look at the Ranch Market side of the business. This is the part of the restaurant where fresh beef is cut to order and packaged before your eyes. The bright red steaks called my name with their intense marbling and their qualities such as no hormones, antibiotics or preservatives.

I had many seating choices which included live-edge tables made from pecan wood from the ranch, booths made with the same tabletop, or a bar top that was made of age-darkened barn wood coated in a thick lacquer. I opted for a window booth. Sliding into my seat, I allowed my eyes to wander the rest of the establishment. I saw cowboy décor on all the walls including, but not limited to, cowboy hats and lassos. I could hear the sounds of the kitchen, plates clanking, grill hissing and knives chopping, coming when the large swinging doors rushed open carrying my food.

Before me was a massive hamburger made of all-natural beef and stacked high with the toppings of my choice. While enjoying my juicy, messy and delicious hamburger I could not help but notice the televisions showcasing the ranch where my beef came from, not even 20 miles from my current location.

I finished my burger, having to wipe away the warm juices that were dripping down my face, and I head over to the aspect that makes this place unique.

The Ranch Market is a glass case kept at a frigid 20 degrees hosting an array of specialty meat cuts. Denver Steaks, Coulotte, Bavette, and Spinalis are just a few of the displayed pieces. While looking at the marbled uncooked steaks I rest my hand on the cold glass, when I lift it I leave small smudges from the heat differences found between my body and the case.

Behind the swinging wooden door, I saw a cutting board and brown butcher paper. When I walked through the “personnel only” door I am greeted by a small and confined area that hosted a cutting board, the paper as previously mentioned, and masking tape to seal the meat when it is cut and wrapped. I was led to the freezer where it is so cold that it makes it hard to breathe, but inside the dark and very cold room, I am surrounded by hard slabs of meat of all types. The ground beef in 1-pound packets clinked together like tasty hockey pucks.

Chadic began cutting the beef to able-to-sell sizes with a knife that glints in the light and thuds when it comes down onto the thick cutting board. Bright red blood pools on the stark white surface and only gets wiped away when his work is done. The meat was taken out to the public side of the restaurant and is weighed, priced, and displayed.

JT2 is a unique business that focuses on family and fresh beef. Both of which they deliver exquisitely. The atmosphere takes you back to your own dining room and the food reminds you of home. The Taylor family puts forth a daily effort to make their restaurant much more than that to all their consumers.

Sonder (noun.)

Sonder is the realization that all the people around you have lives full of trials, successes, and excitement much like your own.

Interviewing someone allows you to take a small glimpse into a specific part of their life.

I was privileged enough to see into the life of Clark Gebel, a team member/grand opening trainer at Chick-fil-a. Clark gets a glimpse into the life of every customer he interacts with and he gets roughly 20 seconds to change that person’s day. He has seen people whose family just passed away, people who are moving away, people that are graduating, and people that are stressed. He has a chance to influence them and he seizes that opportunity.

His daily goal is that “Every guest leave in a better mood than what they arrived in.” HE achieves this by using his cherry attitude and wide smile paired, oh-so-nicely, with the words “My pleasure.”

While we may not all get to teach children, or to move to third world countries and build schools, we all have the ability to share a smile and to make someone’s day better because none of us truly know what’s going on in another’s life.

Every moment we spend in conversation with someone is a chance to glimpse into their life and share in that moment with them, interviewing takes it to an even more extreme level.

My RSS Journey

Busy. The most concise and accurate way to describe my life. This word seems to be descriptive of most people today. Our is society built upon efficiency and we yearn to check off our To-Do lists.

Roughly a week ago I learned of a tool that can increase my information intake, yet does not cost me the little free time I have. The name of this tool is Really Simple Syndication, or RSS for short. RSS has revolutionized the way that I consume News.

Many, including myself, stay away from news due to the immense amount of negativity it portrays. But you don’t have to feel helpless, you have access to tools that can give you power over the content you see; this is where RSS comes in.

After learning about RSS, I was excited to consume news “my way.” Flipboard is the app of my choice that collects news according to the types of stories I wish to see and delivers it to me daily. Notifications about shootings and natural disasters are no longer the only type of alerts I get on my phone, now I also receive news about Christianity being spread, and about rock climbers doing great things.

Easy-to-read tag-lines and an assortment of stories gives options of what news is worth my time, while also allowing me to see the major events being highlighted.

RSS might not be for everyone, but I urge everyone to at least give it a try. Who knows, you may be surprised by the amount of joy that being informed can bring.
